Who Should Read This Newsletter?
Type A personalities at or near retirement should definitely read this newsletter. It could change your life, if for no other reason than misery loves company. Folks who already love to garden, folks who are considering a garden, and folks who think that they will never enjoy gardening, should read this newsletter. If you’ve read a lot of the “how to” content that is out there -- the jillions of books, articles, blogs, newsletters, etc., written by gardening experts explaining how to grow perennial plants -- and think you might enjoy a more outside the box, twisted, and downright funny discussion about gardening, you will enjoy this newsletter.
If you are broke, or cheap, you should read this letter, because at the moment I’m writing it to entertain myself, and to build a community of fellow Type A’s in a lot of pain, so I’m not charging a subscription fee.
If you are looking for regularly published content from a writer who will deliver a great story every week, you should read this letter. I have the content already in the can: more than 25 newsletters, averaging 1,300 words each and taking, on average, about 6 minutes to read. You also get my amateur photography, which probably doesn’t take advantage of many of the features of my iPhone 12. I have gained experience, though, taking photos of dead plants so I could exchange them for a plant worth 50% of what I paid.
So, basically, if you’re breathing, if you have plants that are thriving or struggling in your yard or notice them around you in public or private spaces, and if you enjoy a good laugh, or learning something new even though you thought you couldn’t anymore, you should read this newsletter.

About Me
I’m 66 years old. I’ve been married to my beautiful wife, Linda, since 1990. I have two children. My son, Danny, is married to Sarah, and they tell me we will be grandparents in April of 2024. My daughter, Carly, is a physical therapist with a focus on sports medicine who works with professional soccer teams in Orlando, Florida. I am a cancer survivor. I sold my business in 2021 after a 37-year career as a financial advisor and Chief Investment Officer, managing $2.5 billion in assets for our clients.
About My Writing
I am the author of a book, Buy and Hold is Dead (Again): The Case for Active Management in Dangerous Markets, published by Morgan James Publishing, New York City, in 2009. I’ve written a blog for my business called Echoes from the Pit, which contained three years of weekly content about the activities of our investment analysts. I wrote The Ready, Fire, Aim, Rotary Blog, about leadership challenges in nonprofit organizations, which developed a large readership of Rotarians from around the world. And I created, wrote, and produced a 45-minute documentary called Dare to Dream: How Rotary Became the Heart & Soul of Polio Eradication. Please go to Daretodreamfilm.com and download the director’s cut. Yes, it’s free.
